Succulent care

Most succulents want the same few things. Get light, water and soil right and the rest takes care of itself.

The short answer

Give them as much light as you can, water only when the soil is completely dry, and grow them in gritty soil in a pot with a drainage hole.

The four basics

Light

More than you think. A sunny window, or at least four hours of bright light a day.

Water

Less than you think. Soak the soil, then wait until it's dry all the way through.

Soil

Gritty and fast-draining. Regular potting soil holds too much water.

Pots

Always a drainage hole. Terracotta helps the soil dry out between waterings.

Through the seasons

Most succulents grow in spring and summer and rest in winter. Some, like Aeonium, grow in the cool months and rest in summer heat, so check your plant's profile.

  • Spring Wake up Water more and repot
  • Summer Grow Water whenever dry
  • Fall Slow down Taper off water
  • Winter Rest Bright light, little water

FAQ

Do succulents need direct sun?

Most do best with some direct sun every day, ideally four hours or more. A few, like Haworthia and Gasteria, are happy in bright, indirect light.

Can succulents live indoors?

Yes, in your brightest window. If they stretch toward the glass, they need more light, or a grow light.
