Light
Give it the brightest window you have. Four or more hours of direct sun keeps growth compact and can tint the leaf edges red. In low light it gets leggy, with deep green leaves and drooping stems.
Water
Water deeply, let it drain, then wait until the soil is dry all the way through. In winter, when growth slows, water much less. Soft, discolored leaves usually mean it's had too much.
Soil & pots
Use a gritty, fast-draining mix and a pot with a drainage hole. Jade gets top-heavy as it grows, so move it to a large, heavy pot to stop it tipping over. Terracotta works well.
Temperature
Normal room temperatures suit it. It can spend summer outdoors, but move it into full sun gradually so it doesn't sunburn. Bring it in before the first frost.
Is jade plant safe for pets?
Toxic to cats and dogs.
Propagation
Jade roots easily from stem or leaf cuttings. Cuttings root fastest in summer, but you can take them any time of year.
- Cut a stem a few inches long, just above a leaf.
- Let the cut end dry for a few days until it calluses.
- Set it in barely damp gritty mix in bright, indirect light.
- Water once it resists a gentle tug. That means roots.

Yes. The ASPCA lists jade plant as toxic to cats, dogs and horses. Signs include vomiting, depression and poor coordination, so keep it where pets can't chew it.

Usually water, either too much or too little. It can also follow a sudden change in light. Check the soil before you do anything else.
Why are the leaf edges turning red?
Red edges come from strong light. They're normal and harmless, and a sign the plant is getting enough sun.
Can I grow a jade plant as a bonsai?
Yes. It's easy to prune into a miniature tree, and it makes a good succulent bonsai. Prune in spring.
